Food Allergen Labelling Legislation

Speaker: Fiona Fleming, Managing Director, AIFST B App Sc (Food Technology) (Hons); Masters in Nutrition Management (with Distinction); MAIFST; MAICD

Food labels can provide a wide range of information to help consumers make food choices, whether these are based on personal preferences or the need to avoid certain ingredients or types of foods. Food labels also help to protect public health and safety by providing information on allergens present to enable consumers with food allergy to avoid these foods. Food manufactures are required to declare allergens within the ingredient list on a food product if the food is packaged.

Fiona’s presentation will provide an overview of the requirements that manufacturers are required to adhere to when labelling food products and initiatives that industry have developed to provide further information to consumers.

Food allergy is potentially life threatening. We need food content information on labels so that we can make an informed decision when purchasing foods. Australians welcomed the change in legislation which states that the most common allergens must be clearly labelled, however the proliferation in ‘may contain’ statements continues to restrict food choices for consumers with food allergy. Maria Said will talk you through the challenges of current food labelling and what actions manufacturers and consumers can take to help increase food safety.

Infant Feeding Resources - Nip Allergies in the Bub

Speaker: Sandra Vale, National Allergy Strategy Coordinator, National Allergy Strategy

Learn about new campaign titled Nip Allergies in the Bub - an allergy prevention campaign to help improve eczema care in babies and reduce food allergy rates. Sandra Vale will talk through the current Australia wide campaign looking at reducing the risk of developing food allergy in babies even when babies have eczema and a family member at risk of anaphylaxis.

How does someone get the diagnosis of allergy? Are all allergic conditions related? Should I be looking for a partner without allergy? What are the limitations of a skin prick or blood test when diagnosing food allergy? What is the likelihood of my child having a food allergy? Thunderstorm Asthma is a term that all Victorian’s are aware of following the health emergency of 2016. Such an emergency raises questions, misunderstandings and a want for further information, especially around protecting others and ourselves as we head into the pollen season each year. This session will inform attendees on what thunderstorm asthma is, who is at risk, how to respond and importantly the link between asthma and hay fever.”

Allergic Rhinitis and its Management

Speaker: Dr Marnie Robinson, Paediatric Allergist & Immunologist, Royal Children's Hospital

Allergic rhinitis (hayfever) is often described as an ongoing head cold, an itchy or blocked nose. Many trivialise signs and symptoms and self-medicate with over the counter medications. Marnie Robinson discusses why it is important to be appropriately diagnosed by your doctor and work on a management plan to suit your needs. Marnie will also talk about immunotherapy and how one can become desensitised to the trigger allergen such as grass pollen or dust mites.

Speaker: Dr Wendy Norton, GP, Allergy Department, Royal Melbourne Hospital

Food allergy management is difficult and challenging when someone is allergic to one food, let alone multiple foods. As a parent, how do you learn to manage multiple food allergy under your roof, and what if you have multiple children allergic to different foods and one allergic to nothing? Wendy Norton talks through her own experiences as a parent of a children with multiple food allergy. How does one manage! Wendy will share her experience of management over 15+ years. What’s worked, what hasn’t?
